Greetings from the Chair

The 2024 Cross-Cultural Conference of Family Therapy from Asia and Beyond (FTAB) is an international forum dedicated to sharing discussions on cases and stories of families and couples. Designated presenters will bring these to share with a group of colleagues from across the region.
The conference was initially organized by colleagues of Korea and Japan in 2002, and Taiwan joined in 2013. The three countries have alternately hosted the annual conference for the past 20 years. Traditionally, the conference title would reflect the hosting sequence of these countries, such as “Korea-Japan-Taiwan 2023”. However, for the 2024 edition, we have broadened our horizons to welcome contributions from beyond these initial partners, therefore, the revised title: "the Cross-Cultural Conference of Family Therapy from Asia and Beyond (FTAB)".
This year, we are privileged to collaborate with the Japanese Association of Family Therapy (JAFT) for a joint conference in the beautiful and historical city of Kanazawa, located in the Hokuriku region. Despite the challenges posed by an earthquake in the Noto Peninsula on January 1st, 2024, which affected parts of Hokuriku, Kanazawa has remained relatively unscathed and is actively contributing to the region's recovery efforts. We invite our colleagues to join us in Kanazawa to experience the resilience of this community firsthand.
The conference will feature Dr. William J. Doherty, a distinguished figure in the field of couple and family therapy from the University of Minnesota in U.S., as the keynote speaker, courtesy of an invitation by JAFT. Dr. Doherty will lead several keynote lectures and workshops, which are open to all FTAB attendees.
Additionally, we have arranged a variety of cultural events and social gatherings in collaboration with JAFT's Japanese members, offering a unique opportunity for cultural exchange and networking.
In our ongoing commitment to celebrate cultural diversity, the conference will offer discussion groups in multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Korean, among others, facilitating rich professional exchanges and learning opportunities across different linguistic backgrounds.
We warmly invite you to the 2024 FTAB conference and eagerly anticipate your participation in Kanazawa, Japan, as we look forward to another enriching and memorable gathering.

여러분의 참여를 기대합니다.
我們非常期待你的參與。
皆様のご参加をお待ちしています。

About William J. Doherty
Dr. William J. Doherty is a professor in the Department of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota, contributing to the field of Marriage and Family Therapy in the United States for over 40 years. He has been actively involved in education, clinical work, and research, and pioneered several innovations in the field.

About the Workshop
In this workshop William Doherty will talk about Couples Therapy and Discernment Counseling, a research-based protocol for helping couples on the brink of divorce decide whether to divorce or commit to a full course of couples therapy.

CLINICAL WORKSHOP
ESSENTIALS OF GOOD COUPLES THERAPY AND HELPING COUPLES ON THE BRINK OF DIVORCE
William J. Doherty, Ph.D. (University of Minnesota )

Marriage and couples therapy can be rewarding for therapists but also quite challenging. Most workshops present specific models of couple therapy but do not focus on the basic skills that are necessary for any model to be effective. And they do not teach how to avoid mistakes, even though we all know that mistakes are common in therapy, and perhaps particularly couples therapy where the spouses may come with different agendas and where conflict can be enacted in the therapy room, not just described as it is in individual therapy. The morning session of this workshop will help you avoid the most common mistakes and show you how to practice the fundamentals of good couple therapy, which emphasize structuring sessions and connecting well with both spouses. There will be something for both beginning and experienced therapists.
The afternoon will focus on a common clinical presentation that current models of couples therapy do not handle well: couples on the brink of divorce where at least one spouse is ambivalent about trying therapy. Based on an approach I developed called “discernment counseling,” you will learn how to identify “mixed-agenda couples” where one spouse is leaning out of the marriage and is ambivalent about starting couples therapy, and the other spouse is leaning in and wants to save the marriage by doing couples therapy. This workshop will teach a basic strategy for helping these ambivalent couples without starting couples therapy until they are both on board for working on their relationship.
